It very much depends on what software you are talking about. There was software 
from IBM with ghastly support. There was chargeable software from CA with 
appalling packaging. There was free software with excellent support. Even 
within a single developer it can vary widely from program to program.

As someone who installed and modified JES2 exits from the CBT tape,
modified HASP with British Rail and other contributions  from the
Michigan mods tapes and used another mods tape for an IEBCOPY
replacement as well as being someone who contributed back to the
Michigan Mods 1979 tape, the JES3 tape and the CBTTAPE, I would not
call open source confusing and dangerous. Anything that is put on a
system has to be maintained either in house or by some trusted party
be it a vendor or an open source project.  The user has to understand
the supplier's notification and update process and be able to use it
in their environment.  There have been both open source fiascos and
vendor related fiascos.
