That sounds like your installation originally had two res volumes, somebody meged them onto a single, larger, volume and nobody bothered to clean up the catalog, instead changing the SYMDEF as a hack. That hack will continue to work, but in the long run I'd advise bring your catalog in line with your naming and placement policies.
As for Unix file systems (only zFS for 2.5), I'd advise having names using symbolics derived from &SYSR1. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.)
