By now I suppose that Paul Gilmartin and I are expected to disagree,
and we do again here.

Peter's response would not have been improved by being rewritten by
one of IBM's lawyers to envisage every possible contigency "from the
first day of the world to these days present".

Moreover, while 'likely' does end in 'ly', it is an adjective (as in
'a likely story'), not an adverb (as  in 'is likely similar').  I am
of course aware that the Wall Street Journal believes that 'likely'
and 'probably' are synonyms, but Fowler does not.
