"WAS pretty common"?  I believe most people still use some kind of scheme like 
this.

Interesting!  I expected the regular requirements we see today (special 
characters, numerics, etc.) but instead it jokes about some of the tricks 
people used in those days, like changing nothing but a month name.  I think 
that was pretty common.
