Not what you're looking for, perhaps, but if I don't want to change my code accidentally I've managed to thoroughly habituate myself to using View rather than Edit. Pretty much all the functions you can use in Edit also work in View, so I expect you'll still be able to see notes and msgs. And you can make them data without worrying about saving them accidentally.
