Thanks to a kind suggestion sent off-list, I now know this is because of a #pragma runopts ( POSIX(ON) ) in the source. The program in question evolved from another, where I am 100% sure the option was needed (it was a library, not a linked program) and I guess we just never realized it! So. "nevermind".
