Thank you all for your input! The reason for the question is that IBM is consdering removing the CHKPT macro and is wondering if it is used much. The COBOL runtime uses CHKPT for our checkpoint/restart functionality, I think DFSORT does as well, and also Broadcom's Smart/RESTART facility.
There is also Smart/RESTART functionality that does NOT use CHKPT, so how to figure out what the impact would be is difficult! In COBOL, we do not know how many applications have RERUN in them (the keyword that triggers taking a checkpoint) and if those applications are important or still being used! There will be more investigation into what the impact of removing the CHKPT macro might have on our vendors and customers...
