Tom,
This reminds me of the VSAM-XA almost disaster of the early to
mid 1990s.
Let me make this short and sweet. IBM called a meeting of
developers in San Jose. DFP said what they were wanting to do
with VSAM-XA. I brought to the manager's attention (I think it
was Yates) that the expansion of RBA could cause some serious
problems for some banks.
DFP had to change their ship date and fix their code so that RC=0
means what it always had -- "I did you said and it worked". DFP
had wanted to force customers to also check the reason code to
find out if it worked but with the RBA value larger than they
were prepared to handle.

Thank you all for your input! The reason for the question is that IBM
is consdering removing the CHKPT macro and is wondering if it is used
much. The COBOL runtime uses CHKPT for our checkpoint/restart functionality,
I think DFSORT does as well, and also Broadcom's Smart/RESTART facility.
There is also Smart/RESTART functionality that does NOT use CHKPT, so how
to figure out what the impact would be is difficult! In COBOL, we do not
know how many applications have RERUN in them (the keyword that triggers
taking a checkpoint) and if those applications are important or still being
used!
There will be more investigation into what the impact of removing the
CHKPT macro might have on our vendors and customers...
Cheers,
