David is, of course, correct that DETACH doesn't require a DEFINE. I think Jon meant they were the opposites for the virtual console, rather than DETACH/ATTACH.
If you want, say, a real tape drive attached to your virtual machine (remember tape drives?), you (or more likely an operator or service virtual machine) would ATTACH it; when done, you'd DETACH it, same as a virtual device. That's the point of VM: virtual, real-the guest mostly doesn't need to care.
