Joseph, I think you need to use the "CONNECT" command instead of ALTUSER :
CONNECT userid GROUP(group_name) Afterwards a "LISTUSER userid" command should list all groups that the user is connected to. As most sites run with "list of groups checking", there is normally no need to change the default group after a CONNECT.
