My humble opinion. I do not sell any of the products related to the topic.
1. Any cloud solution is way SLOWER than on-site FICON-attached VTS or other hardware. The bottleneck is the Internet connectivity and there is ...lack of quality of service here (I mean guaranteed throughput, etc.). 2. When considering tape media on backend, I mean *real* tape - any cloud will be more expensive. 3. There is a trick in the above - assuming you need very few tapes, the entry cost could make it expensive. So for SMALL shops the cloud could be attractive. 4. There are hybrid solutions like VTS with cloud attach. In that case your backup performance don't suffer, but later your data is moved to the cloud. 5. Data in the cloud is being considered as DR solution. Indeed - it is not your datacenter. And you can connect to this cloud from you DR center. But... did you pay for cloud availability? There is no cloud - it is still some datacenter. One or several. Depending on the price. Of course one may assume your disaster will not happen concurrently with cloud-provider-distaster. Unless we're talking about some hurricane on Florida. 6. The cloud could be interesting solution as third copy of data. First is located in your primary DC, it is (semisynchronously) replicated to your DR datacenter, but you want third copy somewhere far, far away. Reason? Well, it is not off-topic now: WE HAVE A WAR very close to our border. And yes, many polish companies invested a lot in "third location". VTS to cloud attachment is quick winner here. It is not a datacenter, but it is much better to have data (and the procedure to restore it) than nothing. 7. If you are small shop, you can think about cloud, but there are also third party hardware vendors: Luminex, Optica, SecureAgent, Visara, ATSM.

Hello all,

Is there anyone out there using cloud storage for backup or dataset
migration, using IBM Cloud Tape Connector for z/OS or Model9?
A few months ago one of our clients asked Model9 for a POC and that has
been one of those projects that seems to be going nowhere fast and I am
curious about the upside/downside of this kind of solution versus VTS
solutions (with real cartridges or SSD).
Regards,
Jack
