Interesting idea. That certainly fulfills the requirements of my question and 
certainly should work.

It's a more complex solution than I had hoped for.

I think what I will have to do is make a separate copy of the source code for 
this one purpose. Leave the source code untouched for other purposes but create 
a separate copy for this one test.

(It's a testing situation: what I am after is all of the "results" from the 
compile, not just the object code itself.)
