See section 4.3. Usenet Signature Convention in RFC 3676: ; the RFC also
mentions CRLF as the line separator. Of course, it's talking about the format
over the wire.

It looks like outhouse has problems with trailing spaces, but I believe that I
found a viable hack; type a single blank, backspace before it and then type the
two hyphens. Please let me know if the "-- " now comes through. Thanks.

I'd be surprised if a current version of LISTSERV didn't remove them
automatically, or at least have an option to do so--when properly formatted.
OTOH, how many folks here besides him and me knew about that convention? I fear
it's one that's sorta died since Usenet died. Which is a shame.

Wait, convention isn't CRLF SP, it's <linend>HYPHEN HYPHEN SPACE<linend>

Shmuel, I see the two hyphens but not the space in yours. Did it get stripped
by your client? Or LISTSERV? Might make sure it's really still there...

(note sig in above as a test to see whether a properly formatted one DOES get
stripped)

I would say “no”. I’m happy to ignore potentially offensive text in a signature.

I really miss my old e-mail software, where I could define different automatic
signatures for different recipients.

Since very few email clients support this, I think it would be creating an
unnecessary burden to expect people to alter their signatures just to post here.
