Colin,

Just tried this on my 3.1 system. All works fine.

Is it possible the "dataset not catalogued" message was for some other dataset?
For example related to a recovery?
Does an "I" command get you the dataset details?

I just tried this with an uncatalogued dataset on a volume.
1. I got the dataset list on the volume and then
2. renamed the data set on another screen.
When I went back to edit the dataset from the list from (1) I was informed
"Data set does not exist" with no mention of any cataloguing.

Subject: Can I edit uncataloged datasets?

I have just brought up a standalone z/OS 3.1 system. I used ISPF 3.4,
specified a dataset and volume, and the dataset was found.
If I then use E to edit it, I get the message"Dataset not cataloged".
This technique works fine for z/OS 2.5.
Do all data sets have to be cataloged on 3.1 - or am I missing some
configuration ?
This was a surprise rather than a problem, as my next two steps were import the
user catalog, and defined the alias for the HLQ.
