A 3270 NIP console with no remote access would create a problem for an unattended shop like ours when there is a prompt that prevents IPL (e.g., initialize or join sysplex, which volume to stay offline, etc). The HMC can be controlled remotely, so that's what we use for NIP. If you have remote access to your 3270 NIP consoles, then either way is fine.
