In the latter 80s, CA had come in to install CA-Dispatch. Once Dispatch was up, I observed a high paging rate for the MVS system. Being the top-notch performance and tuning guy that I am (pun INTENDED), I decided to mark SWAPPABLE, address spaces that I deemed "unimportant". Top on my list was GRS. With the name of "GLOBAL" Resource Serialization, I thought this was only used in a multi-system environment. At the time, we were running MVS SP 1.3.x on a single 3083J. I used the swap command of ADR LOOK to mark GRS swappable. Within seconds, really bad things started happening. Within minutes, we had to IPL, in the middle of the day, of a work week.
Or how about, logging on to what I thought was the DR HMC, and IPLing the test LPAR. TEST as in where development takes place, not the TECH services LPAR. I did this late last year! I have never considered myself to be the sharpest knife in the drawer or the brightest Crayola in the box. And, I am not saying that to be humble :) But in spite of my intellectual shortcomings, I have managed to be a system programmer for 40+ years. "Confidentially doc, I am the wabbit."
