Unfortunately you may replace FBS with any non-trivial computing concept, and still be correct.
What's important is the work environment. With a couple of exceptions, I've been lucky enough to work for companies that encouraged experimentation, and provided the means. Shortly after the 2260 came out, we won a CIA contract partly due to demonstrated expertise with the CRTs (a colleague wrote a Battleship game for it, and I wrote some display software). At ADR, Mike Guzik got sick and tired of shlepping multiple card decks, and got resources to write the Librarian.
Inspection of contributions to the CBT tape will show a bimodal distribution; you'll find a number of first-time efforts worthy of inclusion and improvements, as well as nearly bullet-proof works. Over time, the faulty ones tend to be more interesting.
