I'm not at my oc, but does this work?
Rename *.txt *

Mouth *
Then
Rename * *.txt
I assume "Mouth *" is a typo or result of some computer-aided writing. ;-)
Regarding REN - yes!
Yes, now it is the method.
However due to some reasons the source need to be unaffected, so first
step is to copy all the files to separate (temp) directory, change
working directory and the do REN *.TXT *. (note the last dot). And then
do the ftp MPUT *
Is is simple?
IMHO it is much simpler than installing python or any other language on
corporate-managed PC, then prepare and run some RYO program then...
still FTP MPUT.
However I was looking for something *simpler*.
I like simple methods, especially when repeated by
not-very-IT-educated-persons.
Oh, I'm also aware the MFT product would be better. (MFT = Managed File
Transfer). But it is neither free, nor available as a standard equipment
of the workstation bloatware.

My general observation: mainframe society tend to be convenience-blind.
Is anything feasible? Great! Does it require some complex actions?
Nevermind! Problem is solved!
When teaching introductory classes I always try to convince the
mainframe *is simple*. It is simple or it *can be* simple. It depends on
us. Usually.
