A 729 was the tape device for a 7080/7090/7094. 1410 too IIRC.

Watch Nighthawks with Sly Stallone sometime. 360/30 and 2401's in that, and a 1403/2540. Not seen much but it's there. I set them up.

ITYM a card sorter. Later on a 727, or a 729 if you're lucky.

External Message: Use Caution

There was a reason all those old movies, when they had to show a computer,
showed a bank of 3420's all spinning the tapes.

Or with the 3480 autoloaders, "Hey look, it automatically loaded the next
tape!" Ooh, ahh! Don't get me wrong, they were a cool technology upgrade but
pretty unimpressive to watch them in action compared to seeing the 3420s start/stop and
hearing the flapping sound when a tape rewound off the takeup spool.

Ah, makes a LOT more sense to show something on a reel drive! On 34x0 it's more like
"Listen, you can hear the tape rewinding..."

With 3480s one could make an interesting "show" for visiting executives.

ITYM 3420 or older.

 Remember the oscillating sort?

I suspect that most folks here are too young for oscillating or poly.

3420 tape drive had power supplied by IBM 3803 Tape Control. 3420
itself haven´t a direct connection to an installation energy point, 3803 has it.

I remember the bunches of cables involved with the 3420s+3803, but I did not
remember the exact arrangement. As we have said, it was a long time ago. (And
yes, the 3490-type tape cartridges are as handy — except it was seldom that
there were as many of these just lying around waiting to be used. Of course,
that depended on the type of installation involved, etc, etc.)

With 3480s one could make an interesting "show" for visiting executives.
