For z/OS 3.1 Adabas sites I support on Mod 27's, I tend to have 3 volumes to
make each system, a RES, DLB and USS volume. The USS volume contains the base
Unix datasets (root, etc.), and tends to be 60% used, the RES volume tends to
be about 50% used and the DLB volume tends to run close to 90% used.

I have several dataset over-allocated because it makes service a lot easier, so
you could probably get by with much less.

I use mod 54's for the sites that support them, and even though I "could" put
the USS stuff back on the RES volume there, I don't. If you don't
over-allocate things (like me), then you will probably have your DLB volume
closer to under 80% full.

The way I do my maint is to clone these three volumes, changing hte names of
the USS datasets slightly, create a new SMP/e zone for them and apply the
maintenance, then I can simply IPL with the new volumes and keep the old
volumes for a fall-back.

So, short story is that you can do it with mod-27's and not have to worry about
running out of space.
