I didn't say anything about the shape of the flow over the pipe.  I also didn't 
make any comment about the shape of the pipe.  For all intents and purposes, 
the BCPii API set is the protocol that you and I see; whatever smoke and 
mirrors that are used behind the APIs are of no consequence.

It's not clear why the protocol itself matters to you, as your (and my) 
programs cannot get to the "pipe" directly.  If you look at the referenced, 
it's also good enough for the rest of the operating system.  Also, publishing 
the wire protocol might "box-in" IBM on future generations of hardware.
