We had some version of the sideways vacuum tube Tape drive, I do not remember the number, in IBM's Toronto Downtown Datacentre in 1964 and beyond that was used as the source and receiver over a phone line for Stock Exchange data to and from IBM's Datacentres in Montreal and Vancouver. The tapes were then processed on a 1401 and/or a 1460 to feed the data to a 7044.

You actually saw one in the flesh? 727, 729, 24xx, 34x0, yes, but no 7330 or 7340. Yes, I used 7330s many times. Slower than a 729, with horizontal vacuum "columns." One unusual characteristic: a high-speed rewind was really "high speed" and ran off the end (actually the beginning) of the tape and sometimes "lost" a few inches of tape! They "looked" to be less expensive, but they worked well with 1410, 1401, and 7040 systems (where I used them). They might have been used with other base systems as well.
