Re: MICR-related devices, the IBM 3890-XP1 Document Processor (a check sorter/processor announced all the way back in 1988, Generally Available from 1989, Withdrawn from Marketing in 2005) shipped with network connectivity from the very beginning. It was Token-Ring of course, but you can still bridge/route Token-Ring traffic if you need to. To my knowledge the subsequent 3891/XP (marketed for a little over half a decade) didn’t even have a direct channel attachment option. You attached the 3891/XP via Token-Ring or SDLC.
