yes I've also run into the 26 sessions (session IDs A-Z) limit with PCOMM. Like 
others have said, just for testing/tinkering with 3270 connections and maxusers 
(also presumably your objective here is to see if you do slowdown in some way 
over 50 (or n) users), you could use x3270 (windows or linux 
http://x3270.bgp.nu/download.html) or similar freely available tools- I haven't 
used x3270 scripting myself but I hear it is quite similar to PCOMM so if you 
are familiar with that it shouldn't be a big challenge. 
That could be quite an interesting exercise to plot Nusers&responsetime for 
<insert suitable operation here>, with all the usual caveats...
As being touched on, 50(or n) users that are asleep is of course, vastly 
different than those n users that are actively doing something - even if it's 
just ISPF edit and expecting subsecond response etc etc. Up to you how you make 
up your benchmark.
