I managed to ignore this thread completely based on its subject. However I 
hovered over Waynes post, and the intrigue started.
Quick check confirmed the normal suspects were involved.

I am largely language ambivalent - tool for the job predominantly. However 
given my situation where I am usually unable to access high priced proprietary 
offerings, the GNU tools are mighty tempting.
Some time ago I decided to look at the memory management on Linux. Step one was 
get a handle on C. No ifs, no buts.
As for Davids assertion, it may depend on your definition of "popular" - I now 
dabble in it, but I wouldn't be voting for it in a beauty contest   :-)
