The 'period' problem is an old one. It has a syntactic function in DSN[AME]= values, and it is out of place as the first character in a standard one.
It could of course be doubled in this and other, similar positions, as it must be in certain contexts in the HLASM macro language; but I suspect that no one ever judged supporting its nonce use in a non-standard DSN value worth the trouble.
