I will concur that SYS1 could mean IPL volume. But I have many SYS1
datasets that are off the IPL volume and I use &SYSRx to get to them.
The convention I use is, if it is required to IPL the system it is on the
main SYSRES volume and VOL(******) is used. If it is not required, then it
is place on a SYSRES volume (not primary) and the &SYSRx is used.

So I could have a SYSRES set consisting of 5 volumes. Only the datasets on
the first volume get the VOL(******) the rest get the &SYSR.

However, if IBM has altered the meaning of VOL(******) then I will update my
notes.

True but the OP gave SYS1 and as an example which to me implies IPL volume.
Your &SYSRx symbolic would work for other volumes.

I thought the VOL('******') was only valid for datasets residing on the IPL
Volume. If the files were off of the sysres you would need to use something
like &SYSR1 or other symbolic.

And I think the latter is what the OP is working towards.

So then use indirect catalog addressing in the catalog and APF list,
VOLUME(******) .

That's correct .. We are planning to have different master catalog for each
LPAR , and use the SYS1 datasets with same name (but on different volumes)
and wanted to share the same APF list .
