Special does not mean new or innovative. PDSE is 20+ yo, but still "under construction, and still undocumented (I mean free documentation).
My whisky is also 20+ yo, but *it works*. ;-)))

We have used PDSE almost exclusively since the mid-1990s. If a PDS is restored from a backup, it is still a PDS. But, if a PDS is allocated new, it is automatically allocated as DSNTYPE=LIBRARY. Now and then, we run into some utility or another that doesn't work well (or at all) with PDSE. In such cases, we use DSNTYPE=PDS to force the allocation to PDS. Otherwise, very few issues.

We had some ongoing problems that chronically affected our largest PDSEs and so we thought PDSE was to blame for many months but, in the end, those problems turned out to be associated with EAV and ADRDSSU CONSOLIDATE processing.
