I did a search on google and I think I see the entry you are referring to.  The 
ones I saw were using DEVTYPE as a lazy man's way to search the TIOT in that if 
you get a non-zero return code it is not defined.  So, if you wanted to know if 
there was a SORTWK01 defined in the JCL they would issue a DEVTYPE for 
SORTWK01.  If they got a return code of zero you can use the device 
characteristics returned, otherwise it isn't defined.

Personally, I would scan the TIOT and then if I found it I would do the 
DEVTYPE.  The good thing about using DEVTYPE to do the TIOT scan is that it 
will now include scanning the extended TIOT with no programming changes.

It just goes to show you there are always multiple ways to solve a problem.
