Check the VTOC instead of the VVDS. I found this on an APAR.

DFSMShsm will be changed to reset the DS1DSCHA bit to OFF in
the format-1 DSCB of each volume the data set resides on during
backup processing. This solution applies only to nonVSAM data
sets.

These are DASD datasets.

I have, indeed, read the 180,000+ pages of HSM and other systems manuals and
I'm sure the one reference is in there somewhere. :-)

I've Googled this and searched the IBM-MAIN archives, too, but no joy. I've
looked at the layout of the VVDS, thinking it would be defined in there, but I
see nothing. Perhaps it's called something else.

If no one knows off the cuff, then I will be back to finding that needle in the
haystack, but surely I'm not the only person checking this flag.

Subject: Re: HSM and changed or archive bit

My 1st suspect would be df/dss. There is an option to set/reset the change
bit.
HSM also had an option to reset change bit on dump. Check the fine manuals.

Couple of old programs on the CBTAPE can show the state of this bit. (DASD? Not
sure which file this is in.)

HTH,

<snip>
HSM is intermittently failing to backup new datasets. I suspect that
someone/something is resetting the changed or archive bit on the dataset before
HSM gets to it.

Can anyone tell me how I can view the state of the changed bit on a dataset?

Furthermore, I'm only guessing but I would hope that the bit is set to changed
when the dataset is first created.
