David, It ain't pretty, but you can do an IEHLIST of the VTOC in DUMP format. The byte at offset 93 is where you will find the DS1CHIND bit (bit .... ..1.). One thing to remember is the dump portion of the listing actually starts at offset 44 of the format1 DSCB.
