ssh.  I regularly issue:

    ( cd local-directory && tar -cf - . ) | ssh user@remote "cd remote 
directory && tar -xvf -"

(but not so much on z/OS as on other OSes).

The PITA with RECEIVE is replying to the PITA prompt.

(I'd hardly be surprised to hear a better suggestion from Dovetailed.)
