z/OS is now clearly an umbrella term, only definable ostensively and
comprised of a proper subset of the technologies that are executable
on z/Architecture machines.
These technologies have, in general, little else in common. I am
reminded of the elements of one of Borges's sets:
{suckling pigs, mermaids, stray dogs, those drawn with a very fine
camel's hair brush, those that resemble flies from a distance, . . .}
