A note relating to this question: There was a problem (bug) in IBM's bind avoidance function in the DB2 precompiler. It was dependent on a string constant that the COBOL compiler optimized away. Which obviously was a problem. (I don't remember the details.)
It may have influenced the behavior of the 5.1 compiler. (?)
