I don't want tape for product installations, but I can understand why others might.

The biggest problem I see with DVD/Internet installation is that the processes often seem to be created by non-mainframe people. So you might see giant FTP's to/from PC's, firewall issues, USS files, Java, NFS, and even X-Windows as part of the installation process. For some mainframe folks, these things are just not part of their regular activity. A couple of months ago I went through such a process that literally took weeks because of network/security limitations, wrong turns, Java levels, HFS space, etc. The end result was a group of MVS datasets, the same as a 5-minute IEBCOPY job from tape would have produced.

I would like to hear from anyone who really *needs* tape delivery, whether on 3590 or on newer devices, along with the reason why it's needed. You can post here if you want, but to avoid clutter you can just send me a note: [email protected]
