Thanks to all who replied. I must admit I'm unconvinced of the utility, given the overlap of non-obvious values and the fact that the leading "S" or "U" should be sufficient for most people. So I think the real answer comes down to "Because", aka "Tradition" (aka "The same way we've always done it").
