One solution I saw was using a Screen Scrapper process.

Have a PC setup that only has SYSLOG streaming to it. Then have the screen 
scrapper monitor.

Of course, for a Mainframe, automation tools like CA OPS/MVS, IBM Tivoli, etc. 
is more efficient. They are looking for events and providing a way to action 
those events.
