Do you also want to validate the input as well? What if an index level
is empty or longer than 8? What if there are more than 3 levels?

Why? There are specialized instructions like SRST and TRT that can
make the code shorter, but how many times a second do you do this?
OTOH, the code with SRST might be as readable as with a CLI loop.
