You are right in saying that my description was not quite accurate.

Member ZZZZ in the copy target does indeed contain an 80-byte record of all 
blanks. This is still *NOT* the expected data.

This does not show that the member is empty. It shows that it has one record 
containing 32 spaces. I assume that there are actually
80 bytes and you truncated the display in what you posted.
