I'd be very skeptical of any hardware issues, particularly when only one
LPAR was impacted, particularly when the IBM engineer ruled out hardware
issues.

For the record, though, on a z10 machine a serious system memory failure
could potentially "zap" one LPAR -- the LPAR using the part of system
memory that failed -- while the others continue operating. But that
(extremely rare) failure scenario would show up in the machine records,
with "Call Home" triggered (if configured) and no particular mystery. And
the system would soldier on as best it can, perhaps with a fraction of
system memory no longer available.

On the z196/z114 and subsequent models RAIM (Redundant Array of Independent
Memory) provides even greater memory failure isolation than that available
on the z10.
