This may be a silly thought. Could you attach something like a 3490 autoloader to your Virtual tape system and just do the process in house. Maybe rent one (limited lease)?
Some of the considerations for this might be 1) security of the data on the tape 2) if there are tape errors, easier and faster turnaround time on the errors. 3) Cost of device (possible rental) vs. cost of outside vendor. 4) Less cost doing it in-house rather than outside. You may have already consider these things, but I had to ask.
