I bought my MacBook Air Mid 2011. It came with OS X Lion. Since then I've
upgraded to:
Mountain Lion
Mavericks
Yosemite
And soon to Ei Capitan, all for free.

I wish I could say the same about MS. One of the bigger reasons why I bailed
on MS.
