There never was a plain old 'JES'.
"I thought the spooling subsystem in OS/VS1 was called JES." You are correct: JES Did that (VS1/JES) through a lot of of the '70's.Then VS1 under VM, then SVS, then DOS, VS1, and MVS under VM (different place), then finally MVS.
