The announced requirement indicates it is only associated with the
Processor hardware:
* z13, EC12 or BC13
* zEDC Express (min of two recommended)
* all systems accessing compressed data have zEDC Express (recommended)
* z/OS V2.1 or later w zEDC feature & PTFs
It mentions there is minimal CPU overhead, which implies there may still
be some compression overhead versus no compression, but much less than
before and offset by lower CPU for I/O or other moving of compressed data.
One chart looked like compression still requires BSAM/QSAM files to be
Extended Format files, which used to exclude hardware compression for
PDS/PDSE files. Any one know for sure if that is still the case? One
good argument, besides prior CPU overhead, for keeping the old ISPF
PACKED data support was that hardware compression still didn't support
PDS/PDSE libraries. It would sure be nice if large source libraries
could finally get the benefit of hardware compression as well.
Obviously one would want to be sure your DR site also had required
supporting hardware.
