Trust me, I understand. I do. But frankly, the chances of getting BookManager format back very closely approach zero.
What I suggest is that you make your actual requirements for documentation known, rather than a specific implementation. What are those things you want that you cannot do now? (I have my own list, but it's yours we need.)
You could start with Iris's survey...there's a write-in box you can use for the page forward and back function you want.
