There are many changes in the format of the SMF records. However as others have written SCRT does handle different z/OS releases properly.
Today, 12 April 2016, a new release of the JAVA version of SCRT, now 23.13.2 came out. One of the fixes resolves this issue: "This mod-level release fixes an ABEND S02 when using multiple SMF datasets having different LRECLs."
