The 747 was designed as a cargo plane to compete with supersonic passenger jets
(Europe, Russian, and American planes were being designed). It was designed to
hold 2 cargo containers side by side and to fly at about 575 mph
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_747 .
Most other commercial planes fly about 500 mph
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise_(aeronautics) . 747s do take extra fuel
to fly this fast and is one reason why they are fairly limited in market
penetration. Long over ocean routes used to be limited to 4 engine planes, but
2 engine planes are being allowed to fly further and further from the nearest
airport https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETOPS .
