Don't know about "people friendly mm/dd/yy format". At least half the world use dd/mm. And more than one third of dates can't be assumed with certainty unless there is at least one certain other for guidance. Personally, I find yyyy-mm-dd the most friendly. (Much to the disquietude of my family.)
