You don't need to assert anything, it is documented. Could look it up and make those dates a bit more accurate, but it doesn't matter, does it? Unfortunately, for the potential Herculean effort, pre-COBOL II for sure allowed negative zeros in the sense that there was no code to prevent them appearing as results in a COBOL program.
