I was doing some research and I cannot seem to find any specific mention of using a single shared master catalog in the manuals. It doesn't mean I was looking in the correct manuals it just means that what I had been told may not be 100% accurate. The manuls do seem to IMPLY that a shared master catalog is the way to go but there is nothing recommending one over the other that I can see.
